Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultures, languages, histories, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on how our culture and experiences can shape our mental health and well-being.
For many Hispanic and Latino individuals, culture is deeply connected to family, language, traditions, and community. Values such as familismo—the importance of family and close relationships—can provide incredible strength and support.
At the same time, cultural expectations can sometimes create challenges. Expectations around family roles, being strong for others, putting family needs first, or avoiding conversations about mental health can make it difficult to ask for help.
Seeking therapy does not mean we are failing our families or communities. Taking care of our mental health is a form of self-care and strength.
Mental health can also be influenced by experiences such as immigration, discrimination, language barriers, intergenerational trauma, and navigating multiple cultural identities. Therapy can provide a space to explore these experiences without judgment.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s celebrate our roots while also giving ourselves permission to prioritize our mental health.

Talk to someone you trust.
Reconnect with your culture.
Share family stories.
Set healthy boundaries.
Ask for support when you need it.
Give yourself permission to heal.
Our culture can be a source of strength, connection, and resilience – caring for our mental health allows us to continue carrying those strengths forward.
As they say, “Honrar nuestras raíces también significa cuidar nuestro corazón.”
Honoring our roots also means taking care of our hearts.
Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
Nuestra cultura. Nuestras raíces. Nuestra historia. Nuestra salud mental.
